Since Ron Santee’s last full length release, “Cold Blooded Highway”, a lot has changed in the life of the wayward musician. He had went from living and starting his studio in the Mojave desert town of Joshua Tree California to packing it up and heading back home to New Jersey.
This album was written, recorded and produced at his new lakeside home studio in the pine barrens. Santee mixed and produced the record himself playing most of the instruments with the help of Marguerite King on guitars, backup vocals and co writing. On the track “Skin & Bones” Santee brought in his cousins Brandon and Ryan Wood on drums and bass and multi instrumentalist/songwriter Tim Enny on organ.
Much like his other releases, each song varies in style making it hard to slap a genre on the album. The record starts with a psychedelic synth laced intro, Dreamworld, that builds up into the albums title track, “Thick of The Flood”, which is much more of a driving boppy kind of pop song than anything he has done in the past. From there the album runs the gamut of garage rock, country, acoustic and even a psychedelic take on The English Beats “Mirror In The Bathroom”.
It feels in this era of his work, Santee is getting more comfortable producing and experimenting with new sounds and toys in his own space on his own time, all the while producing other artists.
